I went thrifting last week with a friend, and I found two perfect pieces for a project I had been dreaming about for a couple of weeks. Since it was half-price Monday at Unique Thrift Store, I picked up this cake plate for $1, and the candlestick for $.50! I chose a candlestick that had a large base, so the cake stand would be sturdy. I also ensured that the candlestick had a good bit of surface around the candle depression so there would be enough surface area contact between the two pieces.
After I got home, I washed up the plate and candlestick in the dishwasher and broke into my husband's tool closet. I found the treasure I was looking for: Amazing GOOP! This glue makes everything stick like a charm on just about anything--including your skin--so use carefully!
Using a Q-tip, I applied a dime-sized glob of GOOP (love how that sounds!) on the surface of the candlestick and smeared it around until evenly distributed across the top. I quickly applied the cake plate to the top of the candlestick and held it down with pressure for about a minute. I wanted to make sure the surfaces had definite contact before the glue set.
I then let my new treasure cure for 24 hours undisturbed, so there would be a solid seal! This was a fun project for a non-gifted crafter like myself. I love my new dish, as it will serve not only as a great serving piece, but also as a great decorating fixture. I plan to use it as a table centerpiece for fruit occasionally.

Found your post via Twice Remembered. I love your created cake stand. I'm always looking keeping my eyes open for affordable cake stands. And although I have seen others join small candlesticks to cylinders to create apothecary-like jars, I have to say your project is my favorite! The plate you found is perfect.
Now something else I have to keep watch for . . . just the perfect plate and candlestick to join. Thanks so much for sharing!

You've always provided inspiration in your shopping -- but this is simply great. I love glass and now I have good reason for shopping in those Metroplex shops. Thanks, and may God continue to bless you and your family!
That is really, really beautiful! I love cake stands so I'm totally jealous of this!

Great minds think alike! I made something similar this week too! Love that you used glass in your version! I never thought to use a crystal plate.

Way to go! This looks wonderful. I've seen this idea, but I wondered what you could use to connect the two pieces so that they wouldn't look like two pieces glued together. Yours look perfect--I'm going to have to find some of that Goop!
I love this!!! You are a girl after my own heart! I have done a few things like this, but didn't know how to hook glass together. Thanks for the tips :) I found you on beneath my heart.
Here is my link for a metal serving dish I did:

Oh WOW. Such a cute, frugal, smart project! I might need to attempt a cake stand myself after seeing this. Great job!
Cute! I just picked up 4 blue plates and 4 black metal candlestands to make cakeplates with...oldest daughter's graduation is in May and I'll use these for display...blue and gold are school colors and the tablecloth I found was yellow!
Such a cute cake stand! And what a great price!
I don't know why anyone would pay full price for something when they could make something as cute as this for $1.50.
Thank you for linking up to my party!
Blessings,
Traci
